Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has clapped back at former DP Rigathi Gachagua over his sustained one-term presidency remarks directed at President William Ruto.

Speaking during a consultative forum with Tharaka Nithi County leaders on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Kindiki, without mincing his words mocked Gachagua noting that it is shameful that unseating Ruto was his main objective.

The DP also wondered how making Ruto a one-term president was an objective when he had achieved a lot as head of state, the second-in-command also stated that Ruto is among the five Kenyans privileged to occupy presidency in the country.

Kindiki further expressed confidence that the president was focused on delivering promises to Kenyans, and that he will have transformed the country even if he does not get a second term.

“Usitutishe ate rais ni one term president, watu engine wanatutisha ati ‘our job is to make sure William Ruto is a none term president,’ that is your objective? just that and you will have achieved a lot?

William Ruto is lucky to have been among the first Kenyans to have occupied the seat as president of Kenya, some 24 years, others 10 years; if he gets five so be it, if he gets days so be it. Mimi nimekua naibu wa rais today is the 89th day in office, I am working as if this is it hakuna siku ingine ni hii tu thats why I am working because you don’t know you live and work with the grace of God.

“There was somebody in office today he is not here, now he is giving us ultimatums from funerals, how he will make Ruto a one-term president, as if that is an achievement. Ruto’s objective is not to serve for two terms, it is to use the time God willl give him in office to bring transformative programs and then leave so that others can come and take Kenya forward, so msikuje kututisha na one term,” Kindiki said.

Gachagua’s stances

Gachagua had openly promised to work with all Kenyans to ensure that Ruto is not re-elected in the 2027 polls.

“We are part of this team and will walk this journey together to liberate this country,” Gachagua said. “We will make whatever sacrifices necessary to make sure William Ruto is a one-term president.” Gachagua said.

The former DP also challenged Kenyans to stand up against Ruto accusing him of being intolerant and dictatorial.

“The government he leads is a one-man show; he wants his way and all those ministers you see there are flower girls. I was the only one who could stand up to him and say, hey boss, this can’t work,” he added.

“It is a praise-and-worship choir and I cannot fit in it.”
