Kindiki: Registration as UDA aspirants not mandatory for elected leaders

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has stated that it is not necessary for incumbent United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leaders to register as party aspirants at this stage.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms on the eve of President William Ruto’s meeting with all aspirants at State House, scheduled for Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Kindiki said it is not mandatory for sitting UDA governors, senators, members of parliament, or members of county assemblies to register as aspirants at the moment.

He further noted that the number of aspirants has risen sharply ahead of the first United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Aspirants Forum meeting.

As registration through the UDA Aspirants Forum nears its home stretch, Kindiki revealed that 149 hopefuls are seeking the 47 gubernatorial seats, 279 are eyeing the 47 elected senator positions, 323 aspirants have registered for the 47 woman representative seats, 1,372 hopefuls are targeting the 290 National Assembly constituency seats, and 10,230 aspirants are competing for the 1,450 elected ward representative seats.

This brings the total number of registered aspirants to 12,353.

The total number of aspirants registered on the Aspirants Forum was predicted by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. At the time, there were 7,772 registered aspirants. He noted that if, by Friday, January 30, 2026—three days before the registration closed—over 12,000 people had completed their registration.

The announcement comes a day after the UDA aspirants forum was officially launched by the party’s National Steering Committee (NSC) under the chairmanship of party leader President William Ruto. The committee stated that the deadline for registering as an aspirant is February 2, 2025.

Notable politicians who have already registered include former Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny, who will seek to reclaim the seat he lost in 2022.

The registration exercise will culminate in an aspirants’ forum at State House, hosted by the President, on February 4, 2025.
