Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah stunned fellow lawmakers after he attended a Parliamentary session fully clad in Mitumba clothes.

The vocal UDA legislator told the speaker of the National Assembly that he donned the second-hand clothes in solidarity with the downtrodden who fancy the wares.

“Mr Speaker as you can see I am in a very yellow shirt and I must announce it is a mitumba shirt. Honourable Speaker even the coat I am wearing…even the tie and the trouser are Mitumba and they are all nice clothes. I believe I am looking very smart today in this Mitumba outfit,” he said.

Ichung’wah’s stunt comes against the backdrop of a public furore after ODM leader Raila Odinga, during his Manifesto launch, remarked that mitumba clothes worn by most Kenyans could have been worn by people who are already dead.

Ichungwah took a swing at Raila for his remark, stating that it was unfair for the Azimio presidential candidate to belittle mitumba clothes since Kenyans who buy low-quality wares do so due to the high cost of living.

“Even as we say..don’t insult others..and I am on record Mr Speaker to have had tremendous respect for the former Prime Minister. As vehemently as I have opposed his policies and his political persuasions, I have never insulted him and Uhuru. But I will criticize them. Therefore, even for our leaders let us have that heart to be understanding to our people,” the lawmaker remarked.

He added: “Our people do not wear because they like to wear the clothes of the dead people as you say. They wear mitumba because you have captured our state, you have strangled our economy to an extent that they cannot afford the designer clothes that you wear. Today I decided to wear mitumba clothes in solidarity with the people of Kenya who are being insulted for what they wear,” he added.
