Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has launched a fierce attack on National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, accusing him of betrayal and political intolerance.

Speaking on Sunday, December 7, 2025, Khalwale said Wetang’ula could not claim to defend the Luhya community while targeting leaders from the region.

“Wetang’ula, I know what you are doing,” Khalwale said. “You told me yesterday that I do not want to walk with fellow Luhyas. Wetang’ula, if loving your brothers means shooting at them, then you are not our brother. How come you aimed bullets at us?”

Khalwale referred to the recent incident in Bungoma, where Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and his convoy were attacked while campaigning for a DAP-K MCA candidate in Chwele Ward. Natembeya’s vehicles were damaged, and he claimed gunmen shot at him during the chaos. He directly linked the violence to Wetang’ula, accusing him of using state power to settle political scores.

During his remarks, Khalwale reminded Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi that they had held senior government positions for decades but had failed to deliver meaningful development to the Luhya community.

“Wetang’ula, you are lying when you claim that George Natembeya and I do not want to support you or help you grow as leaders,” he said.

“You, Wetang’ula, 30 years as a minister. Honourable Mudavadi, 40 years as a minister. With all those 70 years, you have never shown us a child called development,” he said. “Luhya voters are not wrong for trying a different wife who can give birth to development.”

Rift reshapes Luhya politics

Khalwale and Natembeya have recently moved closer politically, especially during the Malava by-election campaigns. The two backed DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako, defying the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which fielded David Ndakwa. Their actions sparked a political storm inside Kenya Kwanza.

On December 2, UDA de-whipped Khalwale from his role as Senate Majority Whip for supporting a rival candidate. Bungoma Senator David Wakoli replaced him. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei publicly rebuked him, saying he must “pay for his political sins.”

Khalwale’s troubles deepened after he announced that his security had been withdrawn without explanation on November 6, just a day before the Malava vote. Natembeya also said his entire security team had been recalled. Both leaders accused powerful figures in government of intimidation.

The tension has opened political space for DAP-K. Party leader Eugene Wamalwa has welcomed Khalwale, saying UDA pushed him out unfairly. Speaking in Busia on December 6, Wamalwa praised Khalwale for standing up for the dignity of the Luhya community and invited him to join DAP-K.

“If they don’t want you in UDA, welcome to DAP-K. This is our home,” Wamalwa said. He defended Khalwale’s decision to support Panyako, noting that voters in Malava showed unity across political parties.
