Former Sports Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Zacharia Kinuthia is calling for William Ruto to resign from his position as the deputy president if he feels that he has been excluded from running the government.

Speaking to K24 TV, Kinuthia said if DP Ruto feels that he is not involved in the current government or not wanted by his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta, he should resign.

“Resignation is a matter of morality that if you feel that you are not involved, not wanted, not celebrated, the government is rogue then the right honourable thing to do is to exit office with a clean mind at heart and tender the resignation letter,” Kinuthia said.

Kinuthia said that though the president cannot fire his deputy after differing with him due to constitutional constraints, it is worth noting, according to him, that DP Ruto was not voted into office by the citizens. He argued that since Kenyans didn’t elect Ruto, it should be him who should resign if he is not comfortable working with the president.

“Kenyans did not vote for Ruto. They voted for Uhuru. Mzee Jomo Kenyatta would have fired Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (his first deputy) but President Uhuru cannot fire Ruto. So this is not a question of being sacked, it is a question of saying: ‘With all my weaknesses and the prevailing circumstances for my integrity and morality, I tender my resignation,” he said.

Kinuthia’s statement comes at a time when President Uhuru and his deputy, Ruto, have begun engaging in public verbal attacks against each other.

Ruto has been accusing Uhuru’s administration of failing to deliver the promises it made to Kenyans ever since he joined hands with ODM leader Raila Odinga. On the other side, Uhuru has accused his deputy of absconding duty and engaging in early campaigns throughout their second term.
