Kawira Mwangaza endorses Ngirici for 2027 Kirinyaga Gubernatorial seat

Former Kenya Seed Company chairperson Purity Wangui Ngirici has received a major boost after being endorsed by impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat in 2027.

In a high-voltage event held in Ngariama on Friday, May 8, 2026, where the two leaders pulled huge crowds, Kawira threw her weight behind Ngirici, who is eyeing the Kirinyaga governor seat in 2027.

While speaking during the event, Kawira continued with her new rallying call, the “Fagia Wote” slogan, meant to spell doom for politicians allied to the state while drumming up support for Ngirici. Kawira, who is also the party leader of the Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP), assured Ngirici of her support, saying that while other parties might betray her, hers cannot. She heaped praise on Ngirici, describing her as a woman leader who knows how to deliver.

“Sisi tuko na party yetu ambaye inasema fagia wote, na inaitwa UMP, Umoja na Maendeleo Party UMP, na mimi ndio party leader. Chama hizi zote zinaweza mcheza wangui lakini mimi mama mwenzake, siwezi kumcheza. Nataka kusimama na yeye.”

“Thank you, Ngariama, Kirinyaga County. Fagia wote. Wangui Ngirici Governor 2027.”

Despite being impeached, Kawira Mwangaza has continued pulling huge crowds through her “Okolea” programme in Meru County, with her continuing to spell doom for politicians who were at the forefront of spearheading her impeachment, as well as the President, through anti-incumbency “Wantam” chants. This has seen the united opposition slowly court her with the aim of wooing her to their side.

Opposition courting Kawira

The Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka-led team, during their campaigns in Meru in recent weeks, visited her Ntumbiri home in Meru.

Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, who has long been a critic of hers, apologised to her for actively participating in her impeachment.

She was later spotted holding consultative talks with Justin Muturi, Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP-BUS) leader Lenny Kivuti, and Farmers Party leader Irungu Nyakera.

Kawira Mwangaza has also begun aligning herself with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement, which recently saw her hold a meeting with Siaya Governor James Orengo and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, with the leaders expected to hold a joint Linda Mwananchi rally in Meru in the coming days.

Ngirici’s recent political moves

On the other hand, Purity Wangui Ngirici recently decamped and joined what she termed the “Wantam Movement”, something that saw her lose her role at Kenya Seed. She defended the move, saying that she was not fired but had earlier resigned, only for her dismissal to come while awaiting confirmation of her resignation.

Ngirici has vowed that in 2027 she will not vie on an independent ticket, as she did in 2022, where she met her Waterloo. She said that vying as an independent candidate was a hustle that left her drained, insisting that she would join a political party in her bid to take over from Anne Waiguru, who is serving her second and final term.

Both Kawira Mwangaza and Purity Wangui Ngirici served as women representatives in the last parliament, with both making attempts at gubernatorial seats, though only the former managed to clinch the seat on an independent ticket.
