Kathiani MP Robert Mbui calls on Parliament to oust IG Kanja
Kathiani constituency Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has called on colleague Members of Parliament to consider a motion to remove the Inspector of Police Douglas Kanja, as he has termed as being busy and ignoring the members of the united opposition who had gone to seek a report on the state of investigations on police attacks.
Speaking at a local TV station on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Mbui has called on the national police boss to own up to his mistakes, calling on the legislators to remove him from office based on being compromised. Mbui has termed this a breach of the oath of office that he was appointed to uphold.
“How does the Inspector General decide he is too busy to do the Job for which he is employed? He cannot be too busy to meet us. Parliament should kick out this gentleman,” Kibagendi said.

The legislator has said that the National Assembly has the power to kick out of office the Inspector General of police. He has further called on the members of the public to woo their Members of Parliament into kicking out the IG. Mbui has noted that the process may be hindered by the divisions among the Members of Parliament.
IG fails to show up in office
The lawmaker’s sentiments have come at a time when the opposition leaders are condemning IG for failing to attend a meeting that they had attended.
The opposition leaders on Monday, February 16, 2026, staged a dramatic visit to Vigilance House in Nairobi, accusing the National Police Service of failing to act on a series of attacks targeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies.
Led by Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Gachagua, the United Opposition delegation demanded accountability over what they described as “systematic harassment” and violations of human rights.

However, the inspector of police Douglas Kanja did not show up to the meeting as agreed. The leaders blamed President Ruto for issuing instructions to the IG to abscord the meeting.
“Their absence was not accidental; it was a calculated choice. It speaks to an institution that has chosen silence over accountability, and defiance over duty to the Kenyan people. It is a Kenyan institution, funded by taxpayers, that simply and unequivocally chooses to look the other way, to men and women who step on our Constitution. The violence has not stopped,” Kalonzo stated.
