Kasipul by-election: Alai tells off late MP’s son over political ambitions

By , July 10, 2025

Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has poured cold water on the ambition of Boyd Were, the son of the late Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, who is primed to take over from his father if the public declarations by ODM leaders are anything to go by.

In a statement on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Alai discouraged the youthful aspirant from leaving his current employment to pursue politics, indicating that it could be his worst mistake.

“The worst mistake this boy will make is to resign from his KRA job, his father got for him recently, to get into the murky world of politics when it’s just one year to the elections. I don’t know who is advising this boy,” Alai stated.

Kasipul constituency politics

While the Kasipul Constituency has yet to be declared vacant and the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) yet to be reconstituted, Boyd has been traversing the constituency with the hopes of inheriting his late father’s support base.

The seat has attracted several other people, including businessman Nathan Aroko, who has expressed an interest in succeeding Ong’ondo Were.

During his father’s burial on May 9, 2025, Boyd said that he would not be intimidated in advocating for the plight of the Kasipul people.

Succession battles

“First of all, as a family we are not intimidated, we can’t be intimidated,” Boyd told a packed gathering of local leaders, supporters, and fellow mourners.

Mzee was a fearless person, and what I am sure of he never raised a coward. So, for those who thought by intimidating by eliminating dad, they will succeed, that will not happen. It will not disrupt our cause for the people of Kasipul,” he stated.

Ong’ondo Were was gunned down on April 30, 2025, along Ngong Road near City Mortuary in Nairobi in what police describe as a targeted killing. An autopsy revealed he was shot five times.

Several people have been arrested and charged in connection with the macabre elimination that gripped the country, forcing Parliament to re-evaluate the bodyguards assigned to legislators.
