Karua declares interest in 2027 presidency
The move of PLP fielding candidates in the forthcoming mini-polls comes after Martha Karua expressed her interest in securing the opposition’s presidential ticket in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking after attending a service at PCEA Mbogori Church in Chogoria Ward, Maara Constituency, Tharaka Nithi, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Karua said the united opposition believes in healthy competition and will eventually front a single candidate to challenge for the presidency.
“We are in the united opposition, I am vying for the presidency; my brothers are vying for the presidency, we believe in competition, but eventually we will have one candidate as the opposition. I am working hard to be that candidate,” Karua said.
Martha got a boost in her push to run for the country’s presidency on Friday, September 26, 2025, when former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua said she has what it takes to go for the top seat.

”Martha Karua is one leader I believe in the journey of democracy and national liberation. This journey is difficult; many will fall, many will be bought, many will be compromised, but I do not doubt that Martha Karua will go to the end to liberate this country,” the former DP said during the PLP’s National Delegates Conference on Friday.
Gachagua also said Kenya boasts of female leaders who have thrived in different sectors, further hinting at Matha Karua flying the opposition’s flag in the 2027 presidential race.
”We are therefore very happy that her party has endorsed her as the presidential candidate, and as she has said, she has already started convincing us to think whether she can fly the flag, and we are saying women are great leaders in this country, not just in politics, in every sector,” he added.
