Karua accuses Kenya Kwanza of plot to kill democracy

Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua has told the Kenya Kwanza administration that the country will never return to a single party status.

She accused the ruling party of attempting to kill democracy by poaching opposition politicians.

She was speaking at Maina village in Nyahururu at the weekend during burial of former Nyahururu  Deputy Mayor Jonah Gicheru Munga.

Karua, who was the Azimio La Umoja presidential running mate in last year’s election, told young  politicians to stop lecturing the old guard, saying the democratic space they are enjoying was achieved through demonstrations.

She called on police to ensure peace is kept during picketing.

“They (police) should emulate those who worked during Mwai Kibaki’s time, who used to escort demonstrator peacefully,” she said.

During the burial ceremony, leaders differed on the controversial Finance Bill with government critics  opposing for increasing taxes.

“Why is it (Bill) exempting helicopters and their spare parts from taxes and proposing to tax mama mboga and small tea and mandazi seller?” Karua asked.

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga accused the government of profiling the youth after using them to ascend to power in the last election.

  “During campaign you used to refer to them (youth) as hustlers but now you are branding them as outlawed. What has changed?” Maina posed.

Immediate former Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia warned Mt Kenya residents against  division, saying the community would be loser should a “handshake” happen

“Don’t image that people cannot do a handshake. You have seen it before but I want you if it happens when we (Mt Kenya people) are divided we will be the loser,” Kimemia said.

Jabini-Kiburu MCA Kiiru Gachomba called for withdrawal of the Finance Bill and it be subjected to public participation, warning that, “if passed the way it is, it will be oppressive to the people.”

Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu called for support of the national government as it implements its promise of improving peoples’ lives.
