Kang’ata: Gachagua has huge leverage in opposition negotiations
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, June 22, 2026Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has defended the political influence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, arguing that his impeachment does not diminish his importance in ongoing opposition negotiations ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kameme TV on Monday, June 22, 2026, Kang’ata has said that those who dismiss Gachagua’s influence because he was impeached are making serious miscalculations. According to the governor, political power is not determined solely by the position one holds but also by the ability to mobilise leaders and voters.
“Anyone who despises Gachagua’s influence because he is impeached is mistaken. He may not have the biggest seat and yet have a lot of bargaining power,” Kang’ata said.

The governor has noted that while Gachagua may not be on the ballot as a flagbearer, he possesses substantial bargaining power due to his ability to rally a significant number of Members of Parliament, senators and governors in the next general elections.
Kanga’ata has expressed hope that a majority of leaders, especially from the Mount Kenya region, will be elected from the former deputy president’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Gachagua’s advantage in numbers
The first-time governor has continued to argue that Gachagua’s influence extends beyond personal electoral ambitions and into coalition-building efforts, where numbers and regional support often determine the balance of power during negotiations.
“He may not have the biggest seat and yet have a lot of bargaining power. In the first place, he will be able to mobilise a huge number of MPs, senators and governors. Even if he is not vying, he will have huge leverage in the negotiation,’ he added.

He added that even if Gachagua does not seek an elective position in the next election cycle, his capacity to marshal support from elected leaders will give him considerable leverage in determining the shape of any opposition alliance.
Kang’ata’s remarks come amid increasing discussions on the formation of a united opposition front, with various political leaders weighing their influence and negotiating positions ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the governor, Gachagua remains a key figure whose support could prove decisive in coalition talks.
