Kaluma warns of Mt Kenya political drift, cites Gachagua’s fallout with top leaders

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has lambasted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of alienating himself from key national leaders.
In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Kaluma criticised Gachagua for what he termed as political isolation and lack of loyalty.
He questioned Gachagua’s intentions and leadership direction, especially for the Kikuyu community following his fallout with both President William Ruto and opposition figures.
“You can’t hold public office. You don’t want President Ruto, who made you a whole Deputy President from nowhere! You don’t want Martha Karua. You don’t want Kioni. You don’t want Kalonzo. And you don’t want Matiangi. Where are you taking Kikuyu?”

The vocal MP, a staunch ally of President Ruto and supporter of the broad-based government initiative, has recently intensified his criticism of Gachagua.
Cannot hold office
On May 16, Kaluma dismissed any possibility of Gachagua returning to public service, insisting that his impeachment by Parliament had constitutionally disqualified him from holding any elective or appointive office.
Kaluma further accused Gachagua of engaging in political theatrics and attempting to mislead his supporters.
“Having been impeached by Parliament, Gachagua will never hold public office, whether elective or appointive, period. His active engagement in public is all drama and vanity. He is leading his headless flock to nowhere,” Kaluma hit out.
Kaluma urged his followers to spread the message widely and ensure Gachagua and his allies receive it.
“Repost until it reaches Gachagua and his headless flock, and I will follow you, pap!” he added.
The war of words comes at a time when the political arena is going through a shake-up as alliances shift and political heavyweights reposition themselves, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rebrands
On May 15, 2025, Gachagua unveiled the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) under the slogan “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans). The party’s leadership includes notable figures such as Cleophas Malala, David Mingati, Mithika Linturi, Cate Waruguru, and Peter Mwathi. Gachagua announced that DCP will field candidates for all elective positions, including the presidency.

Meanwhile, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua rebranded her outfit into the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) and declared her presidential bid. She is rallying opposition forces behind a woman-led administration, signalling her intent to be a key contender in the upcoming polls.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also reaffirmed his presidential ambitions and is working to unite like-minded opposition leaders.
Adding to the growing list of presidential hopefuls, former Chief Justice David Maraga also entered the race.
