Kaluma demands removal of Hassan Omar as UDA SG amid tensions with ODM
By Mustafa Juma, April 21, 2026Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has called for the immediate removal of Hassan Omar from his position as Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), escalating political tensions within the ruling party and its evolving relationship with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Taking to his official X account on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Kaluma accused Omar of fuelling internal divisions and threatening the stability of political cooperation between UDA and ODM.
He described Omar as a “political novice”, arguing that his leadership style risks undermining delicate political arrangements between major parties.
He further claimed that Omar’s continued presence in a senior party position could destabilise ongoing political engagements between the UDA and the ODM party.
“Hassan Omar is a political novice who served a single term as Senator and was quickly sacked by @TheWiperParty for chaotic leadership. He is an agent of division and confusion whose continuing as Secretary General of @UDAKenya will destabilize the Party’s relationship with @TheODMparty and risk the landslide win by the ODM-UDA coalition in 2027,” Kaluma stated.
Call for action
The MP went further to demand that UDA leadership either restrain or remove Omar from his role, warning that failure to act could have broader political consequences.
He argued that internal disagreements and public disputes within UDA risk damaging broader political cooperation efforts that have shaped recent national politics.
“UDA Party must shut him up or remove him from that sensitive position of Secretary General, soonest,” Kaluma wrote on X.
Rising UDA–ODM political tensions
The remarks come amid heightened political exchanges between UDA and ODM leaders, with both sides increasingly engaging in public criticism over governance, alliances, and regional influence.
Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni has argued that he would immediately terminate any political cooperation between the ODM party and the UDA party if he were in charge of the party.
Speaking on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during an interview with a local TV station, Omogeni questioned the long-term benefits of ODM’s current political arrangement with the ruling party, arguing that it weakens the opposition’s ability to compete effectively.
“If I were party leader of ODM, I would immediately move out of this so-called marriage with UDA,” he said.
He suggested that the arrangement has blurred political identities and reduced ODM’s influence as an independent political force.
Hassan Omar defended
Tetu Member MP Geoffrey Wandeto has, however, come to the defence of Omar, dismissing recent criticism directed at him and instead urging the ODM party to focus its political attacks on President William Ruto.
Speaking on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during an interview with a local TV station, Wandeto described the attacks on Omar as misplaced, arguing that the former Mombasa senator is not responsible for the underlying political tensions.
“It is sad that they have now gone for Hassan Omar, an innocent bystander. He is not the real architect of this; they are shooting the messenger,” Wandeto said.
He maintained that ODM leaders should redirect their criticism to the Head of State, whom he accused of actively seeking to penetrate traditional ODM strongholds.
