Kalonzo rules out being a running mate in 2027
Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed speculation that he could once again play second fiddle in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Kalonzo firmly ruled out the possibility of serving as a running mate.
The former vice president said sustained narratives suggesting he might be lured into joining Kenya Kwanza or supporting another presidential candidate were part of a wider misinformation campaign.
He insisted that his political focus is fixed on leading the country, not backing someone else.
“I don’t think I would be a running mate in 2027. I will tell you why. Some of my supporters, a majority of them, and that is why this administration is vexed with the dream that Kalonzo Musyoka will join Kenya Kwanza; the bloggers are on a full-scale mandate to make it happen, but I tell them, ‘Please stop wasting your time.’ It is too late for any games to be played against me,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo on his sacrifice
He stressed that his political journey has been defined by sacrifice, but this time, he would not settle for less than the top seat.
He also said the country needs “a higher idea” to restore hope and stability, and he hopes his colleagues in the opposition will rally behind that vision.
“In my entire personality, I have sacrificed, but I can’t sacrifice enough for this country. We have a higher idea of getting this nation back to its feet, and if that be the case, I pray to God my colleagues will see it,” Kalonzo pointed out.

Kalonzo’s remarks signal a hardening of his stance as opposition leaders position themselves for the 2027 race.
Having previously served as a running mate in three consecutive elections — 2007, 2013, and 2017 — his firm declaration may reshape coalition talks and succession strategies.
In the United Opposition, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) party leader Eugine Wamalwa are the leaders who are positioning themselves to run against President William Ruto in 2027.
