The Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, has expressed optimism ahead of the United Opposition’s tour of the Western region, describing it as a critical step towards building a united and formidable political front ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking shortly on his X official account on Thursday, July 3, 2025, before the coalition’s scheduled engagements in Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia and Vihiga counties, Kalonzo shared a strong and energetic message, asserting that the time has come to challenge what he called the current administration’s failures and mismanagement of public resources.

“I’m looking forward to the United Opposition’s Western Tour today. There’s no time like the present, ya kubreak system!” Kalonzo posted.

He is underscoring the urgency with which the coalition intends to dismantle the dominance of President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government.

The United Opposition, a coalition of various parties including Wiper, DAP-K, Jubilee, and several other civil society-backed outfits, has been gradually organising joint rallies and regional tours to mobilise support and establish a shared policy platform.

The Western Kenya tour is expected to serve as a launchpad for a series of regional visits meant to consolidate their national base ahead of the 2027 general polls.

The tour will not only focus on political messaging but also on highlighting governance failures under the Kenya Kwanza regime. Unfulfilled promises, rising cost of living, youth unemployment, and controversial tax policies are expected to dominate the opposition’s public rallies and town hall meetings during the multi-day visit.

“The Western region remains one of the country’s most strategic political zones, and it cannot be left behind in the national conversation about leadership and economic justice. We’re not just here to talk politics. We’re here to listen, to collaborate, and to craft a vision that puts the people first,” Kalonzo said in an earlier address.

The 2027 plan

Senior opposition figures expected to join Kalonzo include DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, and Martha Karua of Narc-Kenya. The coalition has also extended invitations to governors, MPs, MCAs and grassroots leaders from across the Luhya community and beyond to participate in what insiders describe as a unity tour with a purpose.

The tour comes at a time when cracks are increasingly visible within the ruling coalition, with growing public discontent over economic hardships and heavy-handed responses to protests. The recent anti-Finance Bill demonstrations have also given the opposition renewed momentum and legitimacy, especially among the youth.

United Opposition’s strategy of taking its message directly to the people across counties may provide it with a strong counterweight to Kenya Kwanza’s centralised governance style.

Despite questions over who will eventually lead the opposition’s presidential ticket, Kalonzo’s active involvement and bold messaging have positioned him as a key figure in the coalition’s frontlines. His recent remarks and renewed public engagements suggest a leader ready to play a central role in shaping the opposition’s path to the State House.

The Western tour is scheduled to run for three days, with key stops in Bungoma town, Kakamega’s Bukhungu Stadium, Busia’s Agricultural Grounds and several community events in Vihiga. The coalition plans to unveil a ‘People’s Agenda Charter’ after the tour — a document that will outline the opposition’s economic and social reform priorities.

As the road to 2027 continues to take shape, all eyes will be on how the United Opposition navigates internal cohesion, national mobilisation, and public trust — elements that will be crucial in mounting a serious challenge to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
