Kalonzo: Azimio will vote no if motion to impeach Gachagua is tabled

By , June 21, 2024

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared that the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition will vote no should a motion be tabled in parliament to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua has faced increased criticism in recent days from Members of Parliament and other leaders allied to President William Ruto. The MPs led by Kimani Ichung’wah have publicly dismissed the DP’s call for one-man, one-vote, one-shilling.

Gachagua’s condemnation

Cabinet Secretaries, including Kithure Kindiki and Aden Duale, have also condemned the DP, accusing him of mobilizing the Kikuyu community.

The pressure on the DP saw Moses Kuria hint at an impending motion of impeachment with a cryptic two-word tweet on June 15: “Impeachment loading.”

However, Kalonzo, who is part of the Azimio brigade, voiced support for Gachagua during the consecration of Kameme FM presenter Bishop Ben Kiengei.

Kalonzo commended Gachagua’s resilience and fighting spirit and declared that Azimio was ready to block any impeachment motion against him.

Furthermore, he suggested that Azimio is prepared to initiate a motion to impeach both President William Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua on behalf of Kenyans.

“This is my first time sitting next to Rigathi. I admire your ability to fight. To those dishonourable MPs, I say this: if you try to bring an impeachment motion against Rigathi, Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leadership and honourable members will vote no! As Azimio and on behalf of the Kenyan people, we will bring an impeachment motion against William Ruto and Rigathi,” Kalonzo stated on X account.

Gachagua’s push

Gachagua has been advocating for the unity of the Mount Kenya region and insists he will not back down despite opposition from loyalists of President Ruto within the government.

Speaking at a large roadside meeting in Karatina on Saturday, June 15, 2024, Gachagua condemned the disrespect he has faced from government officials who oppose his agenda.

He noted that he has been disrespected due to his resolve to unite his home region, criticizing those who seem to wield authority over him due to their closeness with the president.
