Jimi Wanjigi: Ruto is not Kenya’s biggest problem, the economy is

Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi believes President William Ruto is not Kenya’s main problem.

Wanjigi, writing on X on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, said the economy remains the real issue facing the country.

He predicted that Ruto would serve only one term but argued that removing him without addressing Kenya’s economic problems would not be enough.

“RUTO IS ONE TERM. ABSOLUTELY. The people know it,” Wanjigi wrote.

“But here’s the REAL BULLSEYE: Kenya’s economy. It’s the BIG ELEPHANT in the room, and NONE of my competitors have real solutions. Just talk.”

Wanjigi said his political agenda centres on transforming Kenya’s economy and confronting the public debt crisis.

“I’m focused on REVOLUTIONIZING Kenya’s economy with REAL solutions to the debt crisis that’s choking our nation and holding back our people,” he stated.

The Safina leader said he would take the economic discussion to Nakuru, where he was expected to outline his proposed solutions.

“TONIGHT, Nakuru, we’re talking about the issues that matter. It’s time for bold ideas, strong leadership, and RESULTS,” he added.

His statement suggested that his 2027 campaign would focus heavily on public debt, taxation and economic recovery instead of concentrating solely on defeating Ruto.

Otieno rejects illegal debt

Wanjigi’s remarks came after Safina Party deputy leader Willis Otieno called for a comprehensive audit of Kenya’s public debt.

Otieno argued that Kenyans should not be forced to repay loans acquired illegally or through processes lacking transparency and public accountability.

“We reject predatory debt that mortgages the future of our children and condemns generations of Kenyans to perpetual economic hardship,” Otieno said.

“Public borrowing must serve the people, not enrich a few through corruption, inflated contracts and opaque deals.”

The lawyer also demanded publication of borrowing agreements to allow Kenyans to understand the terms of the loans and how the money was spent.

Otieno maintained that officials who authorised or benefited from unlawful borrowing should be held personally responsible.

“We will not pay illegal debts,” he said.

Wanjigi and Otieno are positioning economic reform and public debt accountability as central issues in Safina Party’s campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
