Irungu Nyakera: I will restore order for businesses as Nairobi governor
Democracy for the Citizens Party’s patron and Nairobi County governor hopeful Irungu Nyakera has pledged to offer a solution to what he terms a chaotic business environment in the city if elected as governor in the 2027 general elections.
Taking it to his social media handle on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Nyakera stated that on Wednesday, February 27, 2026, he had an engagement with the members of the Rwathia Group, a long-standing investors’ association, in which he demonstrated the numerous challenges that faced the entrepreneurs in the country, such as over-taxation, paying numerous levies, harassment by county askaris, slow licensing, unsatisfactory infrastructure, and the lack of interaction between investors and county authorities.
“I assured them that once elected governor, I will work closely with the business community to restore order, fairness, and dignity in how entrepreneurs are treated. Nairobi must become a city where businesses are supported to grow, create jobs, and drive prosperity,” Nyakera stated in a post.

The DCP patron stated that businesses are supposed to be encouraged to develop, generate employment and lead to prosperity. He further said that should he be elected, his government would liaise with the business community to make the process of licensing, registration and regulation easier; better coordinate with the county government; and make the investment environment more predictable.
Nyakera previously worked in the State Department of Transport as principal secretary; the State Department of Planning and Statistics as principal secretary in the National Treasury, the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) as chairperson to the board, and the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) as chairperson to the board.
A Fierce Battle Within DCP
The competition in the Democratic Choice Party (DCP) is stiff. Nyakera is engaged in a tough battle with James Gakuya to be nominated to the party, with both of them carrying out lobbying activities to members and gaining ground before the general election.
The tension is expected to rise as the two camps struggle to win the party ticket.
Competition within United Opposition
Outside DCP, the larger opposition is also families marching to address the incumbent of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Johnson Sakaja.
The entry of Deputy Organising Secretary to the Jubilee Party into the race, Pauline Njoroge of Jubilee, has made the competition in the united opposition for Nairobi’s top seat more heated. Babu Owino, the Embakasi East MP of the ODM Party, has also indicated interest in the position. Jubilee’s Pauline Njoroge has hinted at the possibility of working with Babu Owino. This makes the arithmetic even more complex.
The Nairobi race is among the most followed in the 2027 elections, and the intra-party violence and cross-party aggression have ensured that it is a must-win battle to control the capital.

As campaigns commence and nominations are soon, the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race is set to be a tense and hotly contested race with all the contenders vying to be the alternative to the incumbent Johnson Sakaja and resolve the problem of governance and economic difficulties facing the city.
