Irungu Nyakera demands prosecutions over Ksh39B fraudulent City Hall bills
Nairobi County is facing heightened scrutiny as activist Irungu Nyakera has called for a full audit and prosecution of officials involved in fraudulent financial activities at City Hall. The call comes amid growing concerns over unpaid employees and stalled basic services across the city.
Speaking on the issue through his official X account on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Nyakera stated that out of the Ksh120 billion pending bills at City Hall, Ksh39 billion have already been flagged as fake.
“Out of the KES 120BN pending bills at City Hall, KES 39BN are already flagged as fake, even as employees go unpaid and basic services are ignored. We need a full audit, prosecution of those behind the fraud, and a clean system that protects taxpayers and ensures genuine pending bills are paid,” he said.
Nyakera’s statement highlights the urgency of addressing irregularities that have left many county workers waiting for their salaries. The rising wage bill and mismanaged county finances have further fueled public concern about accountability and financial governance in Nairobi.

The Democracy for Citizens’ Party, Nairobi patron, also attributed poor leadership to tribal politics in the Nairobi governor race.
He emphasised that without immediate action, the situation could worsen, affecting both the delivery of public services and the morale of county employees.
By calling for a thorough audit, Nyakera insists on a transparent process to identify and hold accountable those responsible for inflating or fabricating the pending bills.
The activist also stressed the need for structural reforms in the county’s financial systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future. According to him, a clean system would ensure that taxpayers’ money is used appropriately and that only legitimate obligations are honoured.
Nyakera’s appeal underscores broader questions about fiscal responsibility and oversight in Nairobi County. With such a large portion of pending bills under scrutiny, the push for accountability and prosecution of culpable parties seeks to restore public confidence in county governance.
City residents and employees alike are watching closely as calls for audits and legal action intensify, hoping that swift measures will safeguard public resources and ensure the timely payment of salaries and the continuation of essential services.
