KANU party chairman Gideon Moi has condemned the recent surge in abductions and enforced disappearances targeting Kenya’s youth, calling the incidents an unlawful, grave assault on constitutional rights.

Speaking through his X account on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Moi warned that no amount of intimidation could silence a generation demanding dignity, accountability, and systemic reform.

He voiced deep concern about a disturbing trend: activists, protesters, and social media influencers who have been targeted for speaking out on issues like unemployment and governance.

Moi emphatically rejected the politics of fear, he says the government is promoting, urging instead for swift and measurable economic solutions.

“The country needs not a crackdown on dissent but a commitment to sound economic planning,” he said, emphasising the importance of rapid industrialisation, enhancing the ease of doing business, and creating opportunities for the youth.

He argued that such measures would address the deep-seated frustrations simmering among young Kenyans.

Moi also underlined the broader implications of this crisis, asserting that national unity and prosperity depend on safeguarding the rule of law and protecting civil liberties.

“The path to national unity begins by listening to the people and, above all, respecting the rule of law,” he declared, urging an end to tactics that erode democratic norms and public trust.

His remarks come amid growing alarm from rights groups, who have reported a spate of extrajudicial detentions and a shrinking civic space.

By positioning himself as a champion for the youth, Moi is tapping into a wider movement fueled by frustration over systemic inequality and limited opportunities.

While the ruling administration’s response remains to be seen, Moi’s intervention adds momentum to public calls for inclusive governance and economic reform.

In a nation where the youth make up a significant portion of the population, Moi’s statement is more than a political stance; it is a demand for a pivot toward policies that empower rather than silence, govern rather than intimidate.
