Gachagua urges Kenyan diaspora to stay engaged ahead of 2027 elections

By , July 27, 2025

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held a vibrant community rally with Kenyans living in the diaspora in Baltimore, Maryland, where he praised their keen awareness of Kenya’s political and social challenges while calling for united efforts to restore the nation ahead of the 2027 polls.

The former deputy president’s visit to Baltimore comes amid growing anticipation of the 2027 general elections, where political stakes are expected to be high.

His outreach to the diaspora is seen as part of broader efforts to mobilise Kenyans abroad, whose remittances and political influence continue to play a significant role in the country’s socio-economic landscape.

In a statement on his X account on Sunday, July 27, 2025, after the town hall meeting, Gachagua expressed his satisfaction with the diaspora community’s involvement.

“I am happy to note that Kenyans in the diaspora are well apprised of all happenings in our country,” he said, highlighting the global reach of Kenyan political discourse.

During the gathering, Gachagua painted a stark picture of Kenya’s ongoing struggles, citing key issues that resonate both at home and abroad.

“Matters of bribery, abuse of human rights, repression and abuse of the rule of law, youth unemployment, and flimsy economic policy, among other ills, irk Kenyans in a similar magnitude whether at home or in the diaspora,” the statement read.

He underscored the shared concerns of Kenyans worldwide and the need for cohesive action.

The meeting was also a platform for Gachagua to reaffirm his commitment to Kenya’s political future and the country’s development, emphasising that restoring the nation is a collective priority.

“The commitment to restoring Kenya remains a priority to all of us,” the statement noted, rallying the diaspora to maintain their engagement in the country’s affairs.

The DCP boss invoked a unifying message for all Kenyans, reminding those gathered of their shared responsibility in shaping the nation’s future.

Gachagua 2027 factor

While the opposition leadership is increasingly zeroing in on Gachagua, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Interior Minister Fred Matiang’i, the outcome of the ruling will be a major determinant in how the opposition ticket will be decided.

Having been ousted, Gachagua is barred from occupying public office.

In the event the courts uphold his impeachment, it is likely to be a blessing for Matiang’i, whom Gachagua may back as the candidate deputised by Kalonzo or vice versa.

However, in the event the impeachment is overturned, Gachagua, who has worked hard to galvanise the populous Mt Kenya vote bloc and sustain the anti-Ruto campaign, will be eligible to vie as president or running mate.

This is likely to complicate matters for Matiang’i.

Matiang’i has already been endorsed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party and has started preparing the ground for his run.

Arguably, the former CS in the Uhuru administration draws national goodwill and has a soft spot in Mt Kenya region, which would be an incentive for Gachagua to endorse him.

With many Kenyans abroad closely watching the political dynamics back home, Gachagua’s rally served as both an affirmation of their voice and a call to action as the nation prepares for the next critical election cycle.
