The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has stated that the united opposition’s path with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement might soon converge as they seek to form a joint force going forward.

While speaking to Meru local radio stations on Friday, March 7, 2026, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader stated that since both his camp and Sifuna’s camp all subscribe to the “Wantam” slogan, they will soon sit down and chart their way forward.

He said the move is aimed at actualising their dream of making President William Ruto a one-term president.

He further assured Kenyans that they are on the same side with the Sifuna-led ODM faction, saying it is not a must for them to take photos while laughing together to signal to the rest of the country that they are united.

According to Gachagua, what matters most is that they share a common dream of making Ruto a one-term president.

What is important, sisi? Tunasema wantam. Sifuna wanasema wantam. I believe I know somewhere along the way tutaketi pamoja tumalize hii kazi iko mbele yetu.”

He went on to claim that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is now divided into four factions. According to him, the first faction remains with the party leader Oburu Odinga, whom he claims wants to support Ruto in 2027.

The second faction, he said, is aligned with Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho. Another faction, according to Gachagua, is led by Wycliffe Oparanya, whom he claimed intends to form his own party and exit ODM.

The last faction, he argued, is led by Edwin Sifuna, which he described as the “genuine ODM”, with the majority of supporters within the party.

This comes days after the embattled Sifuna floated the possibility of his team joining hands with the united opposition.

Speaking in a recent television interview about why Linda Mwananchi’s next political move could be the United Opposition, Sifuna stated that for President William Ruto to be defeated in next year’s election, there must be an overwhelming repudiation from Kenyans.

He emphasised that this can only be achieved if all like-minded individuals approach the election as a united front.

He committed to the fact that he will not be part of any vote-splitting plan and assured Kenyans that he will not let them down in their quest for change.

At the same time, he urged the United Opposition to continue with its endeavours, noting that their political paths could intersect at some point.

It is also not the first time Gachagua has courted the Sifuna-led faction, signalling the possibility of the two sides forming a political alliance.

He stated that just as leaders within their formation are expressing interest in the flagbearer position, should the Linda Mwananchi team present a formidable candidate capable of carrying the movement’s aspirations, they would all rally behind that person.

He even mentioned Siaya Governor James Orengo as an example of a leader they could collectively support for the top seat.
