Gachagua to Wetang’ula: You are National Assembly speaker, not UDA youth activist
By Mabonga Makhanu, April 8, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to stop discussions about him (Gachagua) in Parliament without substantive motions.
Speaking during the funeral service of the late Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, a ceremony where Wetang’ula was also present, the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) leader took issue with the National Assembly Speaker over his conduct while presiding over parliamentary duties.

According to Gachagua, the Speaker contravened Standing Order No. 55, which prohibits discussing a person who is not a member of the National Assembly in Parliament. For such a discussion to take place, a substantive motion must first be moved.
“I want to draw your attention to studying Order Number 51: that to discuss somebody who does not sit in the National Assembly, there must be a substantive motion. It requires that a member deliver a written, signed Motion approved by the speaker before it is placed on order paper for debate,” Gachagua stated.
Standing orders
He continued to express his frustrations, saying that this has not been the case, as he has been mentioned in Parliament over five times.
He took particular issue with Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, accusing him of discussing him in Parliament with the speaker’s approval, saying that a substantive motion is required under the standing orders for such discussions to occur.
Gachagua further challenged the Speaker, asking why he has allowed the House to discuss him repeatedly, telling him that he has let the National Assembly down.

He went on to emphatically state that the Speaker is the National Assembly Speaker and not a youth winger for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
“You have led the National Assembly down. You are the Speaker of the National Assembly, not a youth winger for UDA,” Gachagua added.
His remarks were met with cheers and applause from the mourners.
