DP Gachagua breaks silence over Ruto’s cabinet dissolution
By Lutta Njomo, July 13, 2024
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to rally behind his boss President William Ruto in his bid to reconstitute a new cabinet that would steer his agenda.
Speaking in Elgeyo Marakwet County where he accompanied the Head of State during the commissioning of the Kipsoen Technical and Vocational College on Saturday, July 13, 2024, the second in command assured Ruto of his unwavering support in his new journey.
Gachagua argued that Ruto had to make the tough decision to put the country on the right development trajectory. At the same time, Gachagua announced that President Ruto will have an opportunity to pick individuals who are not clouded by their vested interests.
“I assure you of one hundred per cent support in your decision of reconstituting a new team that will create efficiency and harmony and that will put the people of Kenya before their personal interests,” Gachagua stated.
“Na hapo rais tunakuhakikishia tutakuunga mkono tukienda mbele ( I assure you that we will support you going forward).”
Qualities of new CSs
According to DP Gachagua, the decision to dismiss Cabinet Secretaries will allow him to pick new people who will be non-partisan.
Further Gachagua noted that President Ruto will have an opportunity to pick people who are not full of pride but determined to deliver on their assigned role.
“Tunakuunga mkono kwa hio hatua ambayo umechukua kutafuta waziri ambao watakusaidia kufanya kazi. Waziri ambao hawana kiburi, na mawaziri ambao hawataingia mambo ya siasa (We support you for the decision you have taken in finding new Cabinet Secretaries who will help you execute your mandate. You will get Cabinet Secretaries who are proud and those who will shun away from political involvements,” Gachagua insisted.
This is the first time Gachagua has spoken out publicly since Ruto’s purge of his cabinet. Before the fall of the axe, Gachagua had reprimanded unnamed officials for leading with pride and despising the electorates.
He had warned them more than once against the vice insisting that eventually, they would face the repercussions of their actions.
During the purge, the Head of State spared Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Principal Secretaries.
Lone survivor, Mudavadi, also accompanied Ruto during his Elgeyo Marakwet tour. However, during his address, he steered clear of the cabinet dismissal debate.
Ruto’s pledge
Ruto on his part, vowed to constitute a cabinet of national unity. The Head of State insisted that he is pushing for renaissance where all the people will be represented in the government going forward.
“For the country to move forward, it is our responsibility to unite. I want to assure you that going forward, I want us to unite. I have made a decision that we are going to work as Kenyans on the same side while harnessing every capability and deal firmly with corruption,” he vowed.
