Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has assured party members that the selection of candidates for the 2027 general elections will be transparent and based purely on merit.

Taking to X, after speaking at his Wamunyoro residence on Saturday, September 6, 2025, Gachagua said the party will not favour any aspirant over another.

“I assured them that our party remains truly democratic and transparent, and we have no preference for any candidates whatsoever. Every aspirant will be given an equal opportunity based on merit, commitment, and the will of the people,” he said.

The DCP leader addressed over 200 aspirants who are eyeing party tickets, praising them for their dedication during the membership drive and for promoting the party’s philosophy with integrity. He emphasised that the party is committed to a fair and inclusive process that prioritises the wishes of the people.

Meru, Embu members protest

Gachagua’s statement came amid rising tensions in Meru County, where some members have openly criticised recent changes in county leadership. Protesters stormed the DCP offices in Meru town, accusing the party headquarters of replacing the county chairperson without consulting local members. They warned that such moves could affect the distribution of party tickets in the upcoming 2027 elections.

Benjamin Kimathi, a ward aspirant, said the leadership changes showed a lack of transparency. “If the chairperson can be changed at night, I speculate that we will even be denied the party tickets,” he said. Another aspirant, Jimly Muriithi, argued that the Meru branch, which has been instrumental in building the party’s presence in the region, was being sidelined.

The leadership wrangles also prompted action in neighbouring Mbeere North, where Duncan Mbui announced that he will run as an independent candidate for MP in the by-elections on 27 November 2025. Mbui accused the DCP of deliberately blocking his ambition and said he remains confident of winning without the party’s backing.

Despite the unrest, Gachagua stressed that the party remains committed to strengthening grassroots structures and ensuring that all aspirants have a fair chance.
