Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stated that his political camp will only pursue leadership change through constitutional and democratic means, insisting that violence and other unorthodox methods have no place in Kenya’s politics.

Speaking during a presser on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Gachagua said his party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), remains committed to peaceful political engagement ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“All these other methods will not work. As for me and my party, the DCP, I want to confirm that we are all abiding citizens and we are peaceful people,” he said.

Constitutionalism

He stressed that his political approach has always been anchored on constitutionalism and the ballot as the only legitimate avenue for leadership transition.

“I have always advocated for change through constitutional means and I am focused on having change next year through the ballot. That is my focus,” he said.

Gachagua further warned against any attempts to resort to violence or irregular methods to influence political outcomes, insisting that Kenya’s future should be shaped through democratic participation.

Choosing next leaders

He added that the 2027 elections present Kenyans with an opportunity to address national challenges and choose leaders who can deliver better governance.

“We have no time to entertain violence. We have no time to entertain unorthodox means of changing a government. We want to change this government through the ballot next year and that is my prayer to all,” he said.

“That is all I plead with our people to know that we have an opportunity next year to address all these matters in a very conclusive manner so that Kenya can be peaceful and Kenya can have good governance and people can flourish and they can meet their aspirations and they can be able to have better lives,” he added.
