Gachagua: Davis Chirchir could have been a better Interior CS
By Mabonga Makhanu, May 25, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for the removal of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, proposing that he be replaced by Roads and Transport counterpart Davis Chirchir.
Speaking during what he termed his maiden address to the nation after his UK visit on Monday, May 25, 2026, Gachagua argued that Chirchir is more mature and better suited to hold such a critical office. He further launched a scathing attack on Murkomen, accusing him of lacking the maturity required for the Interior docket.
Why Murkomen should be fired

Gachagua claimed that the former senator should instead have been assigned a less sensitive portfolio such as Youth and Sports, adding that the Interior Ministry demands a more experienced and composed leader.
He also suggested former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet as another suitable candidate for the Interior Ministry.

“We have Boynet, who was, former police IG. He can be CS interior. Even Davis Chirchir, you can locate him from, transport and bring him to Interior. He’s very mature, but you can’t have a minister who is childish in charge of the security of the country, and it is now very clear to the whole country that is a problem”
Additionally, Gachagua attributed recent lapses in presidential security witnessed at the Coast to the leadership of Murkomen, expressing concern over the safety of President William Ruto. He emphasized that despite their political differences, he remains concerned about the President’s safety and would not wish any harm to befall him.
Lapses in presidential security
Gachagua further noted that although many Kenyans want Ruto voted out of office, they must reject any attempts to remove him through violence or insecurity.
His remarks came a day after sweeping changes were made to the President’s security team following a security scare during an event in Ganze, Kilifi County.
“We want William Ruto out of office, but we want him out of office through the ballot next year. We don’t want him out of the office through any other method. The security of the President, his safety and his well-being are very important ingredients of our political stability as a country,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader continued breathing fury, stating that as we approach the 2027 elections, the country can’t have Murkomen as interior cabinet secretary.
