Former Likoni MP Khalif Mwavumo is dead
Former Likoni MP Khalif Mwavumo Salim is dead, People Daily Digital has established.
Businessman Suleiman Shabal announced his demise on Monday, August 30, morning as he mourned the retired politician as a father figure who assisted him to climb the ladder until he achieved a lot in his life.
“I have, with deep sorrow and profound sadness received news of the death of Mzee Salim Mwavumo the leader of Likoni Wamiji Council of Elders,” the businessman posted on his social media sites.
According to him, the deceased was a man full of wisdom that saw him being tapped into the Council of Elders after he announced his retirement from active politics.
His political career kicked off in the early 1960s when he served as a councillor in the defunct Municipal Council of Mombasa.
He also served as the Member of Parliament of Likoni from 1992 to 1997 after beating Abdulkadir Abdalla Mwidau of KANU. He was voted on a Ford Kenya party ticket.
In 2015, his wife went missing following a deadly tragedy at an event described as a “crush and stampede” which caused the deaths of over 2000 pilgrims in Mina, Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
The pilgrims suffocated or were crushed during the event which is an annual Hajj pilgrimage making it the deadliest Hajj disaster ever witnessed in history.
The family was informed by an official from Al Buraq Hajj and Umrah travel agency that had facilitated her travel to Saudi Arabia that she had been spotted inside one of the ambulances being rushed to hospital.
