The Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa has accused President William Ruto of unleashing violence against members of the United Opposition as the 2027 election preparations intensify. Wamalwa says incidents targeting opposition leaders and supporters have become increasingly frequent across the country.

In a statement shared by DCP on X on Sunday, January 11, 2026, Wamalwa cited recent attacks in Mbeere as an example of what he called deliberate intimidation targeting United opposition leaders.

Walitumia a lot of violence, wakachoma magari yetu, wakaumiza wakaua watu hadi kule Chwele, tuliona a lot of violence upande wa Mbeere and now he is starting to unleash violence on the opposition,” Wamalwa said.

Wamalwa said the violence extended to public events where opposition leaders were attending, including funerals and rallies, noting that even senior figures faced threats to their safety.

“Tumeenda kumzika juzi mke wa JM Kariuki pale Nyandarua tukiwa na Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka pamoja na Rigathi Gachagua, kutoka kule kufika Gilgil, ile violence tuliona pale ni mingi sana tukisalimia wanachi ambao walituambia tusipite tuwasalimia,” he said.

He also described an incident in Narok where violence escalated, forcing leaders to take precautions during public engagements. He said some specific leaders are being targeted the most.

“Juzi tukiwa Narok ametuonyesha violence mpaka Gachagua anatumia helmet sasa. Gachagua anajua he is targeted na amejipanga, pia Kalonzo na mimi tutajipanga kwa sababu Ruto has sense defeat that is why he has resorted to violence,” Wamalwa added.

The party leader called on state institutions mandated to maintain law and order to intervene and ensure the safety of all Kenyans without taking sides, especially political leaders.

“Today we want to demand that the institutions that have been tasked to maintain peace do that without taking sides,” Wamalwa said.

Wamalwa warned of a potential spike in politically motivated violence targeting their political activities.
