Kimilili constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa has thrown a jibe at the opposition leaders led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after they tapped former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i into their team.

Taking to his official X account on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Barasa laughed off the team, claiming that the toxic mix of misinformation, disinformation, and blatant lies defines what he termed as the weak narratives of Kalonzo and Gachagua.

According to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker, the opposition team that also includes People’s Liberation Party (PLP) party leader Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugine Wamalwa, Mukhisa Kituyi and Justin Muturi, and former agriculture CS Mithika Linturi is no match for President William Ruto.

“The toxic mix of misinformation, disinformation, and blatant lies defines the weak narratives of @skmusyoka, @rigathi, and their new cabal. Anyone can see they’re no match for @WilliamsRuto,” Barasa stated.

Matiang’i’s meeting

The lawmaker’s remarks come hours after Matiang’i joined the opposition team, marking his first ever political meeting to display publicly since returning to the country.

While details of the meeting remain unclear, the high-profile gathering of prominent political figures signals potential realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.

Karua, through her official X account, posted a photo of them after the meeting welcoming Matiang’i, Muturi, Linturi and Kituyi, hinting at joining forces with them at the People’s Loyal Coalition.

“Welcoming our brothers ⁦@DrFredMatiang, @skmusyoka, @rigathi, and @EugeneLWamalwa,” she wrote.

On the other side, Gachagua and Kalonzo welcomed Matiang’i, Muturi, and Linturi to their team, emphasising that they are on the right side of history as they join the movement to liberate Kenya.

“The team to liberate Kenya gets bigger every day. Welcome, Dr Fred Matiangi, Hon. JB Muturi and Hon. Mithika Linturi. You are on the right side of history,” Gachagua posted.

“A very good morning and welcome onboard. This is the team that will komboa Kenya,” Kalonzo said.

Matiangi’s presidential bid

The Jubilee Party, on Thursday, February 20, 2025, endorsed Matiang’i as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement, Kioni stated that the decision was arrived at following a consultation with the party’s representatives from across the country.

“These members here have joined others across the country and other leaders of other parties by also saying they want their own presidential candidate as a party,” Kioni stated.
