Cherargei turns heat on Sakaja after attempted arrest drama
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has dismissed the actions of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, he went to see the Senate leadership and members of a watchdog committee. This ended the police search for him after they had issued arrest orders for contempt of Parliament.
Senator Cherargei called Sakaja’s actions “theatrics and drama” during an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. He said that Sakaja is not fit to hold public office.
“What Governor Sakaja was doing yesterday was drama (Kipindire). People like Governor Sakaja and Lelelit must be prosecuted and possibly be declared unfit to hold public office.” Cheragei said.

Cherargei’s remarks come amid mounting scrutiny over Governor Sakaja’s conduct following a series of allegations of misconduct and ongoing investigations. The senator emphasised that public officials must be held accountable and that no one should use political influence to avoid justice.
The call by Cherargei highlights growing concerns among political leaders about accountability in public office and the integrity of elected officials.
Sakaja appears before Senate
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, presented himself before the Senate leadership and members of a watchdog committee in a move that ended a police hunt for him. Sakaja said his decision to personally drive to Parliament was meant to demonstrate his willingness to engage with House committees, even as he called for an amicable resolution of the ongoing standoff between the Council of Governors (CoG) and the Senate.

“I came to the Senate to meet the leadership and members of the committee. First, I am a law-abiding citizen. I have appeared before these committees many times – six times this year alone and about 10 times last year. I have even responded to audit queries dating back to 2015, including those from my predecessors,” Sakaja said.
“When the CoG raised issues regarding that specific committee, we were guided that those concerns be resolved first. Accountability is important, but it must be undertaken in the right way,” Sakaja added.
Police hunt Sakaja
Issa Mohamud, the Regional Police Commander, talked to the press on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Nairobi City Hall and confirmed that officers have been looking for the governor but have not yet found him. He stated that the operation will continue until Sakaja is apprehended and presented before the Senate committee.
“I will go look for him. We are not relenting, and we are going to look for him, and if he does not present himself by tomorrow morning, maybe we will get him tonight,” Mohamud said.
