Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has defended the criticism against Calvince Okoth, popularly known as “Gaucho,” following his recent appointment to the Board of the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

Taking to his X account on Monday, April 20, 2026, Cherargei has defended the appointment, criticising what he described as double standards among Kenyans.

Cherargei questioned why some members of the public demand inclusivity, particularly for informal sector workers such as small-scale traders, boda boda operators, and youth, but raise concerns about qualifications when such individuals are appointed.

“When government appointments are made, many people ask where are mama mbogas, bodabodas, or youth, but when Gaucho is appointed to serve in government, the same people start questioning about qualifications and credentials.  This hypocrisy is nauseating,” Cherargei said.

Call to Service

The Senator encouraged the youth leader to ignore the “intimidation” from the elite and focus on delivering for the residents of Nairobi.

He urged Gaucho to remain focused and committed to serving the public despite the backlash.

Gaucho appointment

The appointment was formalised in Gazette Notice No. 5733, dated April 16, 2026, by County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Suzanne Silantoi. Gaucho will serve a three-year term alongside other board members, with all previous appointments revoked.

Dr Elvis Meli will chair the board alongside Dr Chama Nzai, Susan Wanjiru Kamau, Knight Medza Kaingu, Abdalla Ali, and Gaucho, who will serve as members.

“In exercise of the powers conferred section 9 (j) of the Facilities Improvements Financing Act, 2023 the County Executive Committee Member responsible for Health Services in Nairobi City County hereby appoints the listed persons as members of the respective Nairobi County Level 4 and Level 5 Hospital Boards, with effect from 16th April 2026, for a term of three (3) years,” reads the notice in part.

Gaucho said he was deeply humbled by the appointment, describing it as a turning point in his life and a vote of confidence in his leadership.

“I am deeply humbled and filled with gratitude today. I sincerely thank Governor Johnson Sakaja for this great gesture and for believing in me. Your confidence has truly opened a new chapter in my life,” he said.
