Caroli Omondi: 2027 will require compromise between young and old generations

By , June 10, 2026

Suba South MP Caroli Omondi has opined that the 2027 General Election will be a compromise between the older and younger generations if Kenyans are to achieve the change they have been seeking.

Speaking during an interview with K24 TV on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the outspoken Azimio la Umoja secretary-general argued that the 2027 election will mark a transition period, during which the youth must be willing to partner with the older generation in their quest for change.

He further stated that it is only through such an arrangement that they will have enough energy and experience to bring about the transformation they have long desired.

“My view is that this upcoming election will be a transitional election, so there will be a lot of compromises made by various political formations, so the young people must be ready to compromise with established politicians,” he stated.

Caroli strongly dismissed the notion of blaming the older crop of politicians for the country’s challenges and perceived stagnation. According to him, age should not matter when evaluating leaders; instead, character and track record should be the key factors.

To illustrate his point, he cited the late Raila Odinga, who is widely celebrated for his contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey. Caroli noted that if leadership were judged solely on age, Raila would have been ruled out. However, when assessed based on his character and track record in fighting for social justice and democracy, he stands out as a leader who made a significant impact.

His views mirror those of Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, who has also described the 2027 election as a transitional moment.

Malala recently stated that by 2032, he believes the younger generation should have taken over the leadership of the country, with politicians from the Moi era completely phased out. Like Caroli, he argued that a compromise will be necessary in 2027 to facilitate a smooth transition.

However, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has come out strongly against Caroli’s narrative. According to Amisi, older politicians who have remained in politics for decades without offering meaningful solutions should be voted out.

It is on this basis that he opposes the Linda Mwananchi movement partnering with the United Opposition, insisting that the country needs a fresh crop of leaders to drive meaningful change.
