Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has stated that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is not fit to lead Kenya but remains a key figure in the effort to defeat President William Ruto.

In a statement posted on his X account on June 30, 2025, Amisi noted that Gachagua is not the kind of leader any progressive nation would want, but he is the necessary evil essential in unseating the president.

According to Amisi, although Gachagua stands no chance of leading Kenya or becoming the opposition flag bearer, he still has a critical role to play in the next general election. His involvement will be useful and instrumental in defeating the incumbent president, William Ruto.

Amisi likened Gachagua to a midfielder—important in both attack and defence—but not the striker or the face of the team. He added that if Gachagua were to become the flag bearer, Kenyans would not support it.

“Don’t fight @rigathi; he is not the kind of leader for any progressive nation, but for now, he is the necessary evil you need in a team to defeat Ruto. He cannot be a flag bearer, and if he does become one, then the rest of Kenyans won’t entertain him. He is needed as a midfielder, the engine room, attacking and defending, not as a striker.” Amisi stated.

The opposition

This comes at a time when key opposition leaders—Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Justin Muturi, and Eugene Wamalwa—have joined forces to ensure that President William Ruto serves only one term by 2027. Their recent actions signal a strategic realignment to unite a fragmented opposition and challenge the government.

Gachagua, the former Deputy President, has emerged as a central figure, launching the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) on May 15, 2025, to consolidate Mt. Kenya support.

His “Hi Cousins” campaign, alongside Musyoka during coastal tours, aimed to bridge regional divides but drew accusations of tribalism from Kenya Kwanza figures.

The opposition have now gained momentum, with them now traversing the country to rally support from Kenyans, with them emerging with different slogans meant to sway Kenyans to rally behind them.
