Caleb Amisi: Raila never wanted to enter into broad-based arrangement with Ruto

Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has stated that the late Raila Odinga never wanted to enter into a broad-based arrangement with President William Ruto.

While speaking during an interview on a local podcast on Saturday, January 24, 2025, the outspoken lawmaker explained that the late leader was coerced into the broad-based arrangement by a section of leaders allied to him, as well as the four experts he had appointed to Ruto’s Cabinet.

The MP explained that after Raila Odinga’s loss of the African Union chairmanship bid in January 2025, some politicians allied to him wanted Raila and Ruto to travel in the same private jet from Addis Ababa to Nairobi and hold joint rallies in the city.

He continued to state that it took the intervention of himself, Vihiga Senator Geoffrey Osotsi, and Kisii Governor Simba Arati to fly the leader to Dubai to hide him and prevent the rally alongside Ruto from happening.

Raila flies to Dubai

He further stated that after it was realised that the late leader was in Dubai, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed and CS Hassan Joho were sent to Dubai to capture him and bring him back, taking him to Mombasa, where the President and some of his allied leaders were waiting, and where an already prepared coalition document was to be signed.

“It is in the public domain to go and see Osotsi and Arati; we took Raila to Dubai to hide him.  Now, when they realised Raila is in Dubai, they sent Joho and Junet to go and capture Raila again from Dubai. Where did they take him? Not to Nairobi, but to Mombasa, to an already signed agreement at the Mombasa State lounge,” he said.

He emphasised that Raila left Dubai not to land in Nairobi, but in Mombasa.

“These activities are in the public domain.  Raila left Dubai straight, not to land in Nairobi, but in a private jet to ensure that he lands in Mombasa. When he arrived in Mombasa, you saw the wakina Kimani Ichung’wah were there; they were laughing. Junet was there; the papers were on the table for him to sign,” he added.

Amisi further stated that the late leader refused to append his signature to the documents. He questioned whether Raila’s heart was truly supporting the broad-based initiative and why he would be flown to Mombasa by force and pressured to sign the documents.

He added that they even wanted Raila to hold a rally in Mombasa alongside Ruto, but he refused and instead went to Kisumu.

“Raila refused to sign. Go and ask if Raila signed those papers. As something that Raila was supposed to be there for, why will he be taken to Mombasa by force? Why will he be forced to sign?  Reckoning that it is already prepared. Why did Raila refuse to sign something that he himself wanted to participate in? They were forcing him. They wanted him to have a rally in Mombasa together with William Ruto. Raila again refused,” the MP concluded.
