Boniface Mwangi sends New Year message, framing 2027 election as Kenya’s turning point

By , January 1, 2026

Activist and politician Boniface Mwangi has used his New Year message to highlight Kenya’s growing public debt and position the 2027 general election as a decisive moment for the country’s future.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 1, 2026, to mark the New Year, Mwangi noted that Kenya’s national debt has risen to approximately Ksh12 trillion (about USD 93 billion). He argued that the burden translates to roughly Ksh210,000 per Kenyan, blaming corruption for the loss of public funds and warning that the debt crisis continues to weigh heavily on ordinary citizens.

Mwangi framed the 2027 presidential election as a clear choice for voters: either to re-elect leaders he accuses of perpetuating debt and corruption, or to elect new leadership committed to accountability, recovery of stolen public resources, and the jailing of corrupt officials. He urged Kenyans not to “remain slaves to corrupt regimes” and emphasised the importance of voter registration ahead of the polls.

Ballot revolution

”In 2027, your vote will decide our fate: do we re-elect those who continue to enslave in debt, or do we elect leaders who will arrest thieves, recover our stolen taxes and ensure all the crooks are jailed?” Mwangi posed.

In the message, Mwangi formally stated his intention to run for president in 2027, calling on citizens to join him in what he described as a mission to “fix Kenya for the better.” He portrayed the upcoming election as a “ballot revolution,” using the Swahili phrase wapende, wasipende to underline that change will come through the vote, regardless of resistance.

Chains of slavery

”We cannot remain slaves to corrupt regimes. Make sure you are a registered voter! I, Boniface Mwangi, am running for president in 2027, and together we will fix Kenya for the better,” he added. Mwangi encouraged Kenyans to take ownership of the country’s future, reminding them that the power to change Kenya lies in their hands.
