Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has predicted a tough political future for Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, declaring that he will be voted out in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a forum in Kisumu on September 8, 2025, Babu said that ll be voted out because the MCAS’s bound him incompetent, and he cannot serve Nairobians.

“I want to tell Sakaja that Kenyans will not protect you, he will be voted out because the MCAS’s bound him incompetent, and he cannot serve Nairobians, in 2027 we cannot lose the joy of today because of tommorows trouble,” Babu noted.

Criticism

Babu pointed to failures in service delivery as the main reason behind Sakaja’s dwindling support, singling out the health sector as the hardest hit.

He cited conditions at Mama Lucy Hospital, where patients struggle without basic amenities and are forced to pay for essential services such as X-rays.

“You cannot play politics over the lives of people,” Babu said, stressing that residents deserved leadership that prioritises their welfare.

His remarks come against the backdrop of a dramatic impeachment attempt against Sakaja that had gathered more than 70 signatures from MCAs.

The process, however, was halted following interventions by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, who reportedly sought to preserve stability in the capital.

Migori senator Eddy Oketch has also cautioned that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) alliance may face major hurdles in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.

Migori Senator Oketch has also aimed at ODM leaders who have voiced discomfort with the alliance. He emphasised the need to build stronger institutions within the party rather than relying on external formations.

Fallout over impeachment suspension

The suspension of the impeachment has ignited sharp reactions from opposition leaders, including Babu and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga.

Ruth expressed frustration at what she termed as interference in constitutional processes, arguing that the MCAs’ oversight mandate had been undermined.

“The Nairobi MCAs should have continued with the impeachment; it should not have ended there, not until Senate decides,” she said.

“The MCAs of Nairobi came out to oversee and say that they had no confidence in the governor of Nairobi,” she stated, insisting the Senate should have been allowed to determine the governor’s fate.

The aborted process has further exposed cracks within political circles, with some leaders accusing national figures of shielding Sakaja from accountability. The intervention has also raised questions about the balance between political expediency and the constitutional right of county assemblies to exercise oversight.
