‘It is shocking that Azimio suspended maandamano’ – Cherargei
Nandi senator Samson Cherargei has expressed shock that the Azimio la Umoja -one Kenya coalition suspended the anti-government protests.
Speaking during an interview with KTN on Monday, July 24, 2023, Cherargei noted that it was unfortunate that the opposition coalition suspended demonstrations when the government was gearing up to finalise political conmanship and intimidation in the country.
He also criticised the opposition demonstrations noting that they were violent and enabling criminal activity.
“It is shocking that the Azimio la Umoja-one Kenya Alliance has decided to suspend maandamano yet we wanted to finalise and crush their political conmanship, blackmail and intimidation in this country,” he said.
He, at the same time, claimed that the opposition’s anti-government protests were aimed at rejecting the Finance Act 2023.
According to Cherargei, Members of Parliament (MPs0 have a right to push any legislation regardless.
“Parliament can amend, repeal and make laws. The only thing that parliament cannot do is interpret laws. That is why we make laws that can be interpreted by the High Court,” he stated.
Azimio had on Monday, July 24, 2023, called off the anti-government protests slated for Wednesday, July 26, 2023.
In a statement, the coalition stated that they will instead have a candle lighting session for victims of police brutality.
“Since the last violent break up of our peaceful protests by Police and goons, Azimio la Umoja has taken time to get as complete a picture as possible of the pain inflicted on protesters. While the exercise is incomplete and remains ongoing, a clear picture has emerged of massive
casualties,” the coalition said.
“Azimio has made the decision that on Wednesday, 26th July 2023, we will hold a different kind of protest. The peaceful protests will take the form of solidarity parades and vigil for victims of police brutality in various locations in all parts of the country. We are calling Kenyans to come out on and light candles and lay flowers, preferably white, in remembrance of and respect for the victims.” it added.
