Anyang Nyong’o reflects on 20 years of ODM, pledges focus on youth leadership

The milestone was celebrated with an event that honoured the courage, unity, and resilience that have shaped ODM since its formation.
In his statement posted on X on Sunday, November 16, 2025, Nyongo said the party’s spirit has remained steadfast through the years, noting key moments that defined its trajectory.

“20 years since an orange became a call for justice, we marked ODM at 20 years by honouring the courage & unity that shaped our movement. From the stand in 2005 to the reforms that followed, our spirit has held firm,” he said.

Looking forward, Nyong’o highlighted the need to deepen devolution and focus on mentoring the next generation of leaders. “We now look ahead: deeper devolution & mentoring young leaders,” he added.
The celebration comes at a time when the party seeks to consolidate its legacy while preparing younger leaders to take on future responsibilities. The emphasis on devolution and youth leadership underscores a shift toward inclusive governance and nurturing talent across all levels of political participation.

For Nyong’o, the ODM at 20 commemoration was not only a reflection on the past but also a reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to justice, unity, and leadership development, ensuring that the ideals which formed the party remain relevant in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
The event that has been currently underway in Mombasa since Friday, November 12, 2025, and is expected to be concluded on Sunday, November 16, 2025, brought together party members, founders, and young leaders.

The list of six ODM founders who were recognised included President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Mumbi Ngaru. Henry Kosgey, Franklin Bett, CS Askul Beatrice, and other influential leaders who were identified as senior figures within ODM.
