Amisi compares current deadership unfavourably to Moi era

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi and former Cabinet Minister Martha Karua have criticised President William Ruto’s administration, saying it is worse than the regime of former President Daniel arap Moi.

In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Amisi expressed deep concern over the current state of governance in Kenya. He said that in comparison, Moi’s era now looks better in hindsight.

“Looking at the current state of affairs, even the worst of the Moi government looks like an angel. Getting to the presidency is easy; the problem is governing the country,” Amisi said.

Amisi’s remarks come at a time when many Kenyans, especially the youth, are expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of national matters, including the high cost of living and recent violent crackdowns on peaceful protests.

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua also weighed in, delivering a harsh assessment of President Ruto’s leadership during an interview on a local television station on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

Karua accused the Ruto government of being deaf to the people’s cries, especially during moments of national crisis. She went on to describe the regime as heartless and ruthless.

“We are dealing with a heartless and ruthless regime led by a heartless and ruthless person in the name of Dr William Ruto,” Karua said.

Karua acknowledged that while Moi’s administration was known for suppressing freedoms, it still managed to pull back and listen when the country was on the brink of collapse.

“We call the Moi era the dark days. The distinction between today and those days is that whenever the nation was faced with a serious crisis and at the brink of disintegration, Moi always used to retreat a step back and genuinely listen to the people and attempt to bring solutions,” she added.

Karua noted that today, under President Ruto, young people who protest are met with harsh force instead of constructive dialogue.

“In contrast, under Ruto’s leadership, the youth have taken to the streets multiple times to voice their frustrations, only to be met with gunfire, arrests, and alleged state-sponsored brutality,” she said.
