2027 presidential race: Wahome Thuku tells Matiang’i not to step down in Kalonzo’s favour

By , July 9, 2026

Political analyst Wahome Thuku has urged Jubilee Deputy Party Leader and 2027 presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i not to step aside in favour of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

In a statement shared on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Thuku argued that Matiang’i should contest the election and allow Kenyans to decide who should lead the country.

“Fred Matiang’i should never ever back down on this election. Worse of it, he should never ever drop in favour of Kalonzo Musyoka,” Thuku wrote.

He added that Matiang’i should remain on the ballot until the election.

“Matiang’i should be on the ballot. Let Kenyans decide,” he said.

Opposition divided

Thuku’s remarks come as opposition leaders remain divided on whether to name their 2027 presidential candidate early or wait until closer to the General Election.

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has argued that the opposition should settle on its candidate early to avoid divisions and give the flag bearer enough time to campaign.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has backed that position, saying an early declaration would separate serious contenders from those pursuing individual ambitions.

Amisi has also publicly declared that if he is not the candidate, he would support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando has, however, maintained that the opposition currently has presidential aspirants, not candidates, arguing that official candidates only emerge after clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also maintained that it is too early to settle on a presidential flag bearer, insisting that the coalition should first strengthen its unity before choosing one candidate.

Matiang’i, Kalonzo among hopefuls

Matiang’i and Kalonzo are among the leading figures whose names continue to feature in discussions over the opposition’s 2027 presidential ticket.

With coalition talks continuing, Thuku said Matiang’i should not withdraw from the race before Kenyans have an opportunity to make their choice at the ballot.

His remarks add to the growing debate within the opposition over the best strategy to field a single candidate against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
