The Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairman, Gideon Moi, has confirmed the passing of Job Waka, the party’s executive director.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, Gideon Moi disclosed that Waka passed on after battling cancer.

“It is with a deep sense of loss that we mourn the demise of the Executive Director of KANU, Mr. Job Waka. The late Waka rested in the presence and warmth of his family earlier this morning, after a brave battle with cancer,” Gideon Moi’s statement read in part.

Waka’s tenure

Moi described the deceased as a loyal party leader who rose through the ranks to occupy the executive director’s position. The former Baringo Senator further expressed his admiration for Waka’s commitment and professionalism.

“Waka served our party diligently for more than 10 years, rising through the ranks to become one of the youngest chief executives of a political party. Throughout his time, he discharged his mandate with utmost professionalism and high regards for ethics,” Moi highlighted.

The condolence message also revealed Waka’s contribution to his family, where Gideon Moi emphasised that he was a loving husband and father.

The KANU chair promised to support the family in their difficult moment.

“At a personal level, he was a charming, loving, outgoing, and affable soul with a never-ending sense of humour. As a father, he deeply loved his two children, spending most of his time with them and creating lasting memories.

“I convey my condolences to his family, especially his beloved wife Florence Nzila Waka and his two children. May God’s comfort and grace cover them during this difficult and forlorn moment of grief. We assure the family that we will support and walk with them every step of the way as they come to terms with this loss,” Moi said.

Waka rose to the rank of KANU’s executive director following a reorganisation order of its leaders. He was picked to replace George Wainaina, who was fronted as the Secretary-General by the National Executive Council (NEC) in March 2023.

The position fell vacant after Nick Salat, the former Secretary-General, was expelled following his defection from the party to join President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance.

Besides his involvement in politics, Job Waka was a social entrepreneur who majored in sports.
