Wangeci Warui is not your ordinary business lady. She has excelled at running a chain of businesses; being  a tax consultant, rice miller, running a car hire business and household goods wholesaler.

Her success she says has not been automatic or by accident but a product of intentional decisions based on being keen, she says.

“ Running startups and SMEs can be consuming and draining,” Warui says.

She also points out that it takes application of lessons which in most cases one learns on the go.

One of those lessons, she says is “you need to be passionate and work with people who share in your vision. Paying attention to notice deviations in behavior that affect production is an instinct. It gets better with time.”

While running Bright Steps Car Hire Services, she has learnt that the right management requires good employees who demonstrate loyalty.

“ The external success of any business is a product of internal success and it requires the right team to stay innovative,” she says.

Warui in her early 30s highlights that unique selling points are key as they help you stand out. For example, the company offers towing services and has mechanics on standby to better their services.

She says time is another crucial resource and factor adding that you create time to pursue your goals.

“ Any entrepreneur who desires to succeed must be willing to create time to try their hand at different opportunities while managing the risks involved,” she says.

As a tax consultant, she has also learnt that having the right systems plays a major role in the success of entrepreneurship.

She says that one day she found her wholesale and rice milling shops broken into by thieves who stolealmost half the stock and equipment.

“ This was painful and it taught me the importance of insuring my property to cushion the business from such eventualities,” she says.
