No last-minute extension, KRA tells Kenyans before tax deadline
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a firm reminder that taxpayers must file their 2025 Income Tax Returns by midnight on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, with no extension expected.
The warning comes just days before the deadline, as thousands of Kenyans rush to comply with the requirement.
In its statement released on Saturday, June 27, 2026, KRA urged all taxpayers who have not yet filed to act immediately. The authority noted that it has already given sufficient notice and will not repeat last year’s decision to extend the deadline due to system pressure.
“Taxpayers must submit on or before 30th June 2026, in accordance with the law,” KRA said.
In 2025, KRA granted extra time after heavy traffic slowed down the iTax system on the final day. However, officials say improvements have been made to prevent a repeat of the disruption. The tax agency has upgraded its digital systems and expanded support services ahead of this year’s peak filing period.
Taxpayers who miss the deadline will face penalties and interest charges. Under tax rules, late filing attracts a penalty of Ksh2,000 or 5 per cent of the tax due, whichever is higher. Unpaid tax also accrues interest at 1 per cent per month. KRA may further issue default assessments, which can increase the final tax bill.
KRA stressed that filing returns is not only a legal duty but also a key part of national development.
“Filing your tax return is more than a legal obligation, it is a contribution to national development,” the authority said. “Every return filed supports transparency and helps finance essential public services.”

Filing rules and channels
The deadline applies to all individuals with a valid KRA PIN, including salaried workers, business owners, and those filing nil returns. The filing window opened on January 1, 2026, and closes strictly on June 30 2026, at midnight.
To make compliance easier, KRA has provided several filing channels. These include the iTax portal (itax.kra.go.ke), eCitizen, USSD code *222#, and WhatsApp support via 0711 999 999. Taxpayers can also seek help through the KRA Contact Centre, Huduma Centres, Service Centres, and Ushuru Mashinani offices across the country.
The authority has also extended working hours at its support centres to manage increased demand. Tax officials have encouraged taxpayers to avoid waiting until the final hours, warning that heavy traffic may slow down digital systems close to the deadline.
KRA also reminded taxpayers that filing errors can often be corrected through the iTax system by reviewing income details, matching P9 forms, and resubmitting updated information. For persistent issues, support is available through phone, email, and walk-in centres.
