Joe Sang has been re-appointed as Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Managing Director after emerging top in the recruitment process.

While making the announcement, KPC Board Chairperson Faith Bett Boinnet said Sang will begin a fresh four-year term.

“Mr. Sang’s contract will be for a fresh term of four years, renewable subject to performance. Mr. Sang’s brief but highly effective tenure at KPC (2016-2018) saw remarkable changes in the management and performance of the State Corporation.

“I was part of the KPC board that witnessed the profitability of the company rise steadily from 2016 when he assumed management, culminating in a record Profit Before Tax of KES12.4 Billion (KES8.6 Billion after tax) in 2018,” Boinnet said.

Boinnet said Sang, who rejoined KPC three months ago as Ag. Managing Director, achieved commendable turnaround in the company’s operations, seeing a groundbreaking enhancement of the pipeline flow rate from Mombasa to Nairobi of 1.3 million litres per hour from a prior average flow rate of 950 thousand litres per hour.

“He has also overseen, over the past two months, the improved flow rate to Western Kenya terminals at 636 thousand litres per hour from a prior average of 530 thousand litres per hour.

“These constitute an average improvement in stock delivery of 37% pipeline efficiency. This has resulted in adequate stock cover across the country,” she stated.

Boinnet also credited Sang for overseeing the successful commissioning and commercial uptake of the Kisumu Oil Jetty (KOJ) which she said has so far transported 16.6 million litres of diesel and petrol across Lake Victoria from Kenya to Entebbe in Uganda in the last four months.

“He has also managed, in his short stint upon return, to professionalize the work culture at KPC translating to high staff morale, motivation and high productivity.

“The KPC Board anticipates that Mr. Sang will continue to lead the organization to surpass its former stellar performance,” she added.

Sang’s work experience

Sang previously worked with WHO-KEMRI as a Project Economist, Financial Accountant with National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK), Management Accountant with Unga Limited, Head of Finance for East African Breweries Limited (EABL) Subsidiary, Head of Group Performance and Reporting for East African Breweries Limited (EABL) Group, General Manager Finance & Strategy with KPC and later Managing Director in April 2016.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Strategic Management, both from the University of Nairobi.

He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Member of the Institute of Public Certified Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).

Sang returned to KPC as the acting MD in February this year after a Nairobi court cleared him of corruption charges over the construction of the Ksh1.9 billion Kisumu Oil Jetty.
