Safaricom issues fresh warning over M-Pesa PIN security
By Faith Lagat, July 15, 2026Safaricom PLC has issued a fresh advisory urging M-Pesa users to remain vigilant when approving payment prompts, warning that a customer’s PIN remains the final safeguard against fraudulent transactions.
In a message shared on its official X account on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, the telecommunications company reminded customers to verify every payment request before entering their PIN.
“Your M-Pesa PIN is your final line of defense. Before approving any prompt, take a moment to confirm who you’re paying and why,” Safaricom stated.
“If you receive unexpected payment requests or prompts you don’t recognize, decline them and report the incident through our official support channels.”
The advisory, accompanied by the hashtag #JiulizeNiUkweliAmaCon, comes amid continued efforts by the company to curb mobile money fraud targeting M-Pesa users.
Customers urged to verify payment prompts
Safaricom cautioned customers against approving unfamiliar payment requests, noting that fraudsters increasingly rely on deceptive prompts and impersonation schemes to trick users into authorising transactions.
The company advised customers to pause and verify recipient details before entering their M-Pesa PIN, especially when they receive unexpected prompts on their phones.
M-Pesa is one of Kenya’s most widely used mobile money platforms, facilitating person-to-person transfers, bill payments, merchant transactions and other financial services for millions of customers.

The latest advisory reinforces previous consumer awareness campaigns aimed at helping users identify and avoid common fraud tactics.
Safaricom has consistently maintained that it does not ask customers to disclose confidential information such as their M-Pesa PIN, national identity details or one-time passwords through phone calls, text messages or social media.
The company has also advised customers to report suspected SIM swap incidents immediately through its official customer care channels.
Measures to enhance account security
Safaricom encourages customers to keep their M-Pesa PIN confidential, avoid predictable PIN combinations and change their credentials regularly to enhance account security.
The company also advises users to confirm transaction details before approving payment requests and to ignore unexpected prompts that do not match any transaction they are undertaking.
Customers are further encouraged to forward suspicious messages to 333 and contact Safaricom through its official support channels if they suspect fraudulent activity.
In addition, users are advised to secure their mobile devices with passwords or biometric locks and avoid sharing personal financial information with unknown individuals.
The latest advisory forms part of Safaricom’s ongoing consumer awareness campaign aimed at reducing mobile money fraud and encouraging safe digital financial practices as M-Pesa transactions continue to grow across the country.
