Small-scale farmers in Migori County are worried over increasing negative effects of climate change.

They claimed that climate change is reducing crop yields and lowering livestock productivity, echoing the need to invest heavily in mitigation measures.

Cereal crop farmers John Odera, Ken Ouma, Dominic Apiyo, Grace Onyango, Mary Atieno underscored to train more farmers on how to overcome the effects.

They said substantial investments in adaptation is required to maintain current yields and to achieve production and food quality increases to meet demand.

In an interview with Business Hub, Ouma said thousands of them were currently feeling the negative impacts of climate change due to weather variability.

“This means we have to keep on shifting our agroecosystem boundaries, invasive crops and pests exposed to recurring extreme weather,’’ he said.

However, worries aside, there is an air of good news for region as already the county has engaged in mitigation measures to boost their crop production.

The county has brokered a partnership with Ripple Effect, a non-governmental organisation to boost productivity amongst farmers. The organisation serves individuals and communities most in need of a helping hand.

The partnership involves infusion of new technology to derive improved crop and animal yields.
According to the County Agriculture Executive Committee Member Lucas Musenda, the venture will boost food security and create employment to thousands of residents.
