The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a temporary shutdown of its iTax platform to allow for scheduled system maintenance, in a move that will affect all users accessing tax services online.

According to the notice issued by KRA via social media on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the maintenance exercise will take place overnight, temporarily rendering the system inaccessible for a period of four hours.

Scheduled downtime

KRA said the maintenance will begin on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 10:00 pm and run until Monday, May 18, 2026, at 2:00 am.

“Kenya Revenue Authority informs all stakeholders that there will be a scheduled maintenance of iTax as detailed below: START: Sunday 17th May 2026, 10:00 pm. END: Monday 18th May 2026 2:00 am. DURATION: 4 Hours,” KRA stated.

During this period, all services on the iTax platform will be unavailable as technical teams carry out system upgrades and optimisations.

All users will be affected during the maintenance window.

Affected services

The iTax system is used by millions of taxpayers across Kenya for a wide range of services, including filing tax returns, VAT submissions, PIN registration, and other compliance-related processes.

KRA did not specify the exact nature of the upgrades but indicated that the exercise is part of routine system maintenance aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.

KRA also expressed regret for any disruption caused, stating that the maintenance is necessary to ensure improved performance and reliability of the platform.

“Any inconvenience caused is highly regretted,” the notice read.

The iTax system remains a central pillar of Kenya’s tax administration framework, with millions of individuals and businesses relying on it for compliance with tax obligations.

The scheduled system maintenance exercise comes a few days before the tax returns filing deadline of June 30 every year.

The latest maintenance comes a month after KRA announced a system downtime for the same reasons.

In a notice shared on its official X account in April 2026, the authority stated: “Please be advised that iTax will be undergoing a scheduled maintenance from today, Monday, 27th April 2026, 10:00 PM to Tuesday, 28th April 2026, 2:00 AM. We regret any inconvenience caused.”
