Methu calls on Ol Kalou voters to remain calm ahead of poll day
Nyandarua Senator and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Secretary General designate John Methu has urged supporters in Ol Kalou to remain calm regardless of political developments, saying the focus should remain on voting in the July 16 parliamentary by-election.
In a Facebook post on Friday, July 10, 2026, Methu said he had received information that Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia could face arrest following the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee’s judgment.
“I’ve just been informed by a UDA allied MP from Nyandarua that they’ve reached an agreement with IEBC to recommend the arrest of the Kipipiri MP today, in the judgement being delivered today at 3 PM by IEBC,” Methu wrote.
He continued: “The intent is to make the Olkalou DCP supporters angry, come out and demonstrate. They intend to infiltrate the unrest, to complete the Ethekon-led plan of postponing the by-election and feign violence.”
Despite those claims, Methu urged supporters not to engage in demonstrations.
“I urge all our supporters; whether Hon Wanjiku Muhia or any of us is arrested, please remain calm. The most urgent priority is voting for Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru – Ngotho.”
IEBC sanctions Muhia
Methu’s remarks came hours after the IEBC Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee fined Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia Ksh1.5 million for breaching the Electoral Code of Conduct.
The committee also directed the legislator to issue a public apology within the stipulated timeline and warned that failure to comply with its orders or any subsequent violation of the Electoral Code of Conduct could attract additional sanctions provided for under the Elections Act.

The decision followed remarks Muhia made during a political rally in Ol Kalou, which the committee found to be inconsistent with the Electoral Code of Conduct.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election was occasioned by the death of area MP David Njuguna Kiaraho and is scheduled for July 16.
The contest has attracted candidates from several political parties, including UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyagah and DCP’s Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru.
Opposition rejects poll postponement
Methu’s appeal comes as opposition leaders continue to oppose any move to postpone the by-election.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, former Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Edwin Sifuna and Dr Fred Matiang’i called on the IEBC to enforce electoral laws while allowing the election to proceed as scheduled.
“The buck stops with the IEBC, which must immediately demonstrate that it has control over the conduct of elections in this country,” the leaders said.
They added that those found violating election laws should be investigated and prosecuted instead of postponing the poll.
“The IEBC and government must not punish the people of Ol Kalou by denying them their constitutional right to elect a representative. Nor will we accept any postponement of the election. That’s cowardly.”
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also criticised the handling of the by-election, while former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi questioned whether postponing the Ol Kalou poll could create a precedent for future elections.
Earlier, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the commission was monitoring reports of voter bribery, violence and other election offences, warning that the commission would take appropriate action where the legal threshold is met.
With less than a week to polling day, political leaders continue to urge supporters to remain peaceful as campaigns enter the final stretch.
