The government has confirmed that the newly built Kisumu Air Traffic Control Tower is now fully operational, marking a major milestone for aviation safety and regional connectivity in the Lake Region.

In an update shared on Friday, December 5, 2025, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said he led the National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC) on an oversight and verification tour of the facility, which was recently commissioned at Kisumu International Airport.

He said the tower, constructed by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), is now complete and functioning, a development expected to improve air traffic monitoring and enhance both safety and efficiency at one of Kenya’s busiest regional airports.

“Led the National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC) for an oversight and verification visit of the recently commissioned Kisumu Air Traffic Control Tower, at the Kisumu International Airport,” he said.

Omollo noted the significance of the project, saying the infrastructure is now delivering on its intended purpose.

“The new tower, constructed by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, is now fully complete and operational,” he stated.

He further highlighted how the upgraded facility positions Kisumu as a stronger transport and economic hub in East Africa.

“Its enhanced capabilities reinforce the Airport’s Class 3 status and strengthen its role as an aviation hub for the Lake Region and neighbouring countries, including Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, elevating Kisumu City’s stature as a rapidly growing regional hub, enhancing its capacity to serve East Africa’s expanding economic and transport needs,” Omollo added.

The tower is expected to improve visibility for air traffic controllers, support more efficient aircraft movements, and bolster emergency response coordination. The upgraded traffic control tower makes Kisumu more competitive as a gateway for regional trade, tourism and cross-border transport.

The operationalisation of the tower now sets the stage for further expansion aimed at transforming Kisumu into a fully fledged regional aviation hub.
